The surface area and tiny pores make it an ideal home for the cycle bacteria that you want in the filter. A good ceramic filter media will provide large amount of surface are for bacteria to grow. Many people prefer ceramic rings over other biological filter media due to its cylindrical and hollow shape which allow water flow through and less likely to get clogged.
