HID automotive headlights use a micro-discharge bulb, filled with a mixture of noble gases (including Xenon).Unlike halogen bulbs, HID bulbs do not have filaments. Light is created through production of an arc between two electrodes. An electronic “ballast” is used to convert the lower-voltage current used by a vehicle’s electric system to the higher voltage required by HID bulbs. These features enable HID bulbs to produce very bright light, and last significantly longer than other bulbs.
